以太坊的市值是否会“翻转（Flipping）”超过比特币，是加密行业一直都在探讨问题。最近，去中心化金融（DeFi）的研究人员认为，“PoS”正是以太坊能够在未来取代比特币的经济基础与架构。
在了解什么是“PoS”之前，必须先了解区块链的运作方式。
区块链为一种分布式的网络结构 — — 点对点网络（P2P），不存在中央服务器。因此，区块链运用一系列的共识算法机制以取代中央管理者的工作，检查和更新在区块链上的交易账本。根据不同的运行特征，上述共识机制可进行不同的分类。下文仅介绍最常见的PoW和PoS。
PoW为Proof-of-Work的缩写，即“工作量证明”，这也是比特币的共识算法。一种通过算力的比拼来选取一个节点，之后，由该节点决定下一轮共识的区块内容的共识方式。简单来说，当比特币矿工们挖掘到一个新区块的时候，便需要对SHA-256（密码散列函数一种比特币采用的算法，特点为验证正确答案易，得到答案难）进行运算，直到找到正确的“答案”（也被称为“哈希值”）为止。而这一个过程，便是耳熟能详的比特币“挖矿”活动。
这样的方式，虽然很大程度上能够保障了内容的安全性，公平公正 — — 谁先得出的答案谁就能获得相应的利益，但以现在的计算机水平，要破解SHA-256需要消耗极大的资源。每一次的运算都需要强大的计算能力，但最终却只有一位用户能够脱颖而出，显然是一种浪费资源的方法。因此，专家们提出了一种新方法，试图解决比特币共识机制PoW的问题，并命名为PoS。
PoS为Proof of Stake，称作“股权证明机制”，通过计算用户占总币数的百分比和占有币数的时间来决定记账权。因此，当加密货币质押的数量越多、时间越长时，获得奖励的机会就越大。在PoS机制中，由于通过数量和时间来决定记账的节点，因此就不需要像PoW一样，通过强大的算力进行运算，不会造成资源浪费。
“PoW本质为算力竞争，而PoS的本质为金钱竞争。”
整体而言，虽然PoS弥补了PoW需要准备强大昂贵的采矿设施的缺点，但是由于其通过数量和时间来决定记账点的方式，导致富人大量囤积加密货币而获得更多的话语权的失衡可能——若是这些富人们联合起来，就能对区块链上的交易有着话语权，为“去中心化”带来威胁。
