Grayscale Bitcoin Trust（灰度比特币信托，GBTC）实现了让投资者“像买股票一样买比特币”的简单方式，被称为是世界上“第一个单独投资，从比特币价格中获取价值的公开上市证券”。它了不起的地方在于，让所有不具备加密货币知识的人，像买卖股票一样去买卖比特币。通过GBTC，用户不需要学习任何比特币知识、不需要建立加密货币钱包、不需要到比特币交易所去买比特币、不需要担心比特币被盗也不需要担心比特币会因个人因素而不见，让公共市场的投资者在受监管和受保护的环境中购买比特币。
GBTC由美国著名的加密货币投资者Barry Silbert旗下的Grayscale创办，多年来一直都是比特币的主要持有人之一。Grayscale是一家美国的数字资产管理公司，允许美国的合格投资者通过传统市场，在受监管的环境下探索加密货币投资商品。
它之所以大受欢迎，是因为它提供了一个让投资者接触加密货币但是不必拥有比特币的机会。
简单来说，Grayscale类似于商品交易所的交易基金（ETF），以BTC的价格作为支撑。购买比特币ETF之后，便等于间接投资了比特币。此时，投资者拥有的是可以被交易的比特币基金，而不是直接拥有比特币，但是这两者却在收益上并没有什么本质区别，由于以比特币的价格作为支撑，因此比特币ETF追踪的价格就是比特币的价格，比特币价格上涨后GBTC的价格也会上涨。
GBTC虽然可以像股票一样进行交易，但是它本质上为信托基金，不是股票，它的运作原理很简单：邀请投资者注入资金，买入大量的比特币，当基金再交易所上市后，让投资者公开买卖信托的股份。
一般上，GBTC的买卖以折价或是溢价的方式进行。
当GBTC以折价的方式运行的时候，意味着资产净值（NAV，Net Asset Value）高于Grayscale出售的ETF，反之，意味着GBTC的价格高于NAV。但是，Grayscale的股票几乎一直以溢价交易的形式进行交易，平均溢价的百分比为20%，这意味着投资者都需要以高于市价20%的比特币价格才能投资购买相同价值的GBTC投资组合。
但奇怪的是，投资者们却偏好这一种交易方式。
为什么呢？一方面，股票毕竟是机构投资者们最熟悉的传统投资工具，GBTC套用投资者们常用的框架来了解比特币的价格走势和进行投资决策，不需要额外地去了解如何购买比特币、也不需要担心如何安全的存储和管理私钥。
以信托基金的方式，也拓展了机构投资的版图。与传统的加密投资不同，GBTC投资者不必在交易所将货币资产转换为数字资产，只需在GBTC中购买一份股份，将它们安全地存放在托管合作伙伴处就可以了。除了简化数字资产投资后的缴税方式外，购买公司的股票还能为投资者提供一定的税收优惠。
