Meta (formerly known as Facebook) has rolled out Meta accounts and Meta Horizon Profiles, which will be used to replace Facebook and Instagram which were once to log in to the company’s virtual reality (VR) system.
“The update will roll out globally on a gradual basis, so if you don’t have the option to create a Meta account and Meta Horizon profile right away, you’ll get the update soon.”
What will be the difference?
- Meta Account
Oculus users are no longer required to log into Meta VR devices with a Facebook account, but with a Meta account. The Meta account allows the users to log into their VR devices and view and manage their purchased apps in one place. - Meta Horizon Account
The Oculus profile will be also evolved into a new Meta Horizon profile. The Meta Horizon account represents the user’s social presence in VR, by allowing others to customize their username, avatar, and other information. The current “Friends” model on Oculus will also shift to a new “Followers” structure that is similar to Instagram. Users who own a Meta VR headset will automatically “follow” all their friends on Oculus.
What about the Developer?
The current developer surfaces such as Oculus Developer Hub (ODH) and Developer Center will be transformed into Meta Quest developer surfaces.
If any developer had previously merged their Oculus developer account with a Facebook account, they will have the option to remove their Facebook account from the Meta account. All users can add or remove their Facebook and Instagram accounts from their Meta account at any time from Accounts Center without losing the ability to log in, manage the application or even enable developer mode in-headset.
However, developers have to be aware that, after setting up the Meta account, they will need to update the ODH to version 2.7 in order to continue using it. It will become available on the ODH Developer Center soon that allows developers to download it manually, or there will be a 2.7 release notes window pop-out to remind the users of this update.
